City employees may increase their insurance coverage

Caledonia city employees will have the opportunity to expand their insurance coverage to include dental, as well as several other protection plans, if they so choose. After listening to a presentation by Aflac representative Michael Carney, the Caledonia City Council instructed administrative coordinator Mike Gerardy to pass information about possible insurance coverage plans to city employee association members.

According to Carney, who made the presentation at the April 9 city council meeting, the plans he is offering would act as a supplement to existing insurance plans, which would be the responsibility of whomever signed up for the additional coverage. There would be no cost to the city.

Carney explained that he would need a minimum of three persons from the employee association to sign up for the supplemental Aflac plans. Some of the plans to be offered include dental (which the cityís current insurance carrier does not offer), supplemental injury, disability, cancer protection, and personal recovery protection plans.

Individual employees enrolling in any of the plans would pay for the additional insurance through payroll deductions, administered through Aflac.

When asked by Gerardy if there would be additional bookkeeping required by the city, Carney replied, "we would take care of everything. The city would just have to issue one check to Aflac per period.

Council members agreed if city employees could receive additional insurance without taxpayers footing the bill, they were in favor of the program.

Gerardy, who is also a member of the employee association, will pass the information on to association members at the May employee association meeting.
