Track teams do well in first meet
The Caledonia/Spring Grove girls track team took first place at the Kasson-Mantorville Invitational over the weekend, earning 133 points. Kasson Mantorville was next with 128; Pine Island had 92 and Kingsland had 54.
C/SG had six first place finishes. In the 55 meter dash, Molly Furlong was first with 7.8 and Courtney Gran was in second place with 7.88. Lindsey Gran had 8.34 and Bobbie Jo Schuttemeier had 8.43. Gran and Schuttemeier are new to the program this year.
Samantha Wermager was the only C/SG athlete to compete in the 55 meter hurdles, and she ended up in first place with a time of 9.72.
The girls sprint medley relay team took first with a time of 4:53.99. Runners are Rachel Bauer, Bobbi Jo Schuttemeier, Arie Albert and Richell Mehus.
Molly Furlong ran the 200 meter in 29.2 seconds, which was good for first place. In fourth place was Courtney Gran, who ran the 200 in 30.72. Gran is out for the first time.
Caledonia/Spring Grove was third in the 4 x 800 relay and 4 x 400 relay.
Stormy Ott, Jenna Dokken, Michaela Neuzil and Richell Mehus run the 4 x 800. In the 4 x 400, Dokken, Neuzil and Mehus run with Bobbi Jo Schuttmeier.
In the field events, Molly Schaller was first in the shot put with a distance of 30 ft., 6.5 in. Betsy Schaller was in fourth place with a throw of 27 ft., 0.25 in. Arie Albert threw 24 ft. 5 in. This is Albertís first year out for track.
In the triple jump, Katie Wiste was in first place at 31 ft. 2 in.
Wiste was second in the long jump with a jump of 13 ft. 11 in. Bobbie Jo Schuttemer was third with 13 ft. 0.75 in.
In the high jump, Wermager jumped 4 ft. 6 in. for third place.
In other events, Stormy Ott, a ninth grader who is out for the first time, was fourth in the 1600 meter with a time of 6:36.6.
Eighth grader Megan Schmitz, also a newcomer, was second in the 400 meter with a time of 69.33. Seventh grader Jenna Dokken had a time of 1:13.8
"I was very happy for the way the girls performed at the meet," said coach Paul Stevens. "This was the first meet for many of the girls. A lot of varsity girls did not compete because they have had only a week of practice.
"Molly Schaller did well in the shot put. Samantha Wermager looked very good in winning the hurdle race and she also placed 4th in the high jump. Molly Furlong looked strong in both sprint races. Courtney Gran also ran very well in placing in her races. Molly of course has been one of the girls we count on for placing well, but for Sam and Courtney this is their first season out. The younger girls showed me that they can run with the older girls and do well. Our team should be much stronger as the weather gets warmer and the girls get more experience."
Boys second at track invitational

Caledonia/Spring Grove boysí track team finished a strong second to Pine Island at the Kasson-Mantorville Indoor Track Meet on Saturday at Rochester Community College.
The four team meet featured a repeat of two of the top teams in the section, Pine Island and Caledonia/Spring Grove, The teams finished first and third respectively in 2006. Also competing were host K-M and Kingsland.
Boysí coach Carl Fruechte said he sent his runners into the meet with the idea of "competing and doing their best and getting a meet under their belt."
"We have a lot of numbers in our program and I am very happy with our boys," Fruechte said. "I thought our relays went smoothly. Everyone stepped up," he added.
Zach Gran led the way in individual performances with victories in the 55 meter and 400 meter dashes. Derek Lager won the 200 meter dash.Ý
Caledoniaís 200 meter relay team was also a champion.
Getting seconds for the Warriors were Jesse Christian in the 55 meter hurdles, Cody Petersen in the 55 meter dash, and Eddie Hodges in the 200 meter dash. The latter event, Gran was third as the Warriors swept the event. Derek Beier was second in the long jump and Andrell Hudson was second in the shot put.
