Flood assistance center
located in Caledonia

Houston County has established a center for Houston County flood victims and for those willing to assist flood victims.

The center is located in the Caledonia City Hall Council Chambers at 231 East Main St., and will be accessible FROM 6:00 am TO 9:00 p.m. per day. flood victims needing assistance or volunteers willing to help with flood damageclean-up, may stop in or call 507-725-2799.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse Wisconsin has indicated that a flood warning continues for much of Houston County including the Root River near the city of Houston. This flood warning will remain in effect until water level fall back below flood stage.

The flood warning for the Root River near the city of Houston is expected to continue until Tuesday morning. At 11:00 a.m. on Monday August 20, 2007, the flood stage was 16.7 feet. At 15 feet, minor lowland flooding occurs.

Residents living in low-lying areas or along streams and creeks are to continue taking precautions to protect life and property as additional rainfall is expected.

Houston County officials have reported that conditions for many roads are still unstable, and numerous roads remain closed at this time.

Houston County will be continually assessing the condition of all rural roads and will make any necessary announcements as information becomes available.

Under no circumstances are you to attempt to enter flooded roadways by foot or by car.

Even roads that may seem safe are surrounded by saturated soil which could quickly turn into a mudslide or cause trees to fall on the roads.

In order to assist with the disposal of flood damaged household items, the recycling drop-off sites in Houston, Hokah and La Crescent will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. through this Saturday. Refuse containers will also be placed at the Ball Field in Brownsville. Remember, household debris taken to any location needs to be sorted by material type.
