Houston County trying
to restore transportation
By Tom Murphy
Special to the Argus
It may take months, even years, to restore Houston Countyís roads and bridges to their condition of Friday, August 17.
Rainfall of historic proportions occurred (over 19 inches) in a 24 hour period starting Saturday, August 18.
In the meantime the county is working very hard to return transportation services on county roads. County engineer Marcus Evans predicted, "it wonít come easy, but we will get it done. We will need your help and your patience," Evans told a group of about 150 persons who attended an informational meeting held at Caledonia High School Monday morning.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty and a host of county and state officials attended Monday morningís meeting.
Of Houston Countyís 34 roads, 10 were closed due to the torrential rains. Three county roads were down to one lane. By the 10 a.m., meeting Monday, maintenance supervisor Tom Molling was predicting the opening of several roads that day.
The roads were closed because of bridges being out of service, mud slides, and road erosion where the sub base washed away.
