Shop locally: Support your local merchants
By Daniel McGonigle
Argus Managing Editor
Shoppers today have more choices than any time in the history of this nation. From on-line sources to those big box stores in the larger communities just a convenient commute away. A one-stop place to find everything you need for your holiday lists. Or, shopping from the convenience of your own home, in your pajamas. Pretty intriguing.
However, there are still no better options than your local shops and stores. By spending your hard earned local wages locally, you are making a commitment to your community.
The store owners are your neighbors, your children's classmates and your friends.
So this holiday season, rather than sending thousands of dollars to a corporate office somewhere in Arkansas, be sure to support your local merchant.
Not only will they know you by name, they may have that perfect gift that is one of a kind and not something sold in bulk in a box store.
Caledonia has lots of unique gift shops and offers something for everyone's taste.
If you're really stuck, a nice gift certificate to your local merchant can also make a nice gift. That way you are saying you support your hometown, and you may be inspiring the person you bought the gifts for to step foot into a shop they might not have yet checked out.
The business community in Caledonia has been very generous in their support of the school and this newspaper. They have done a wonderful job of giving back to the community that they live, play and own a business in.
The least we can do is give a little back to them and show how much we appreciate all of our businesses.
Having a diverse and active business community really adds to the quality of life we all enjoy here in rural Minnesota.
No one wants to live in a town with multiple vacant main street buildings where the nearest convenience is 30 minutes away.
So again, this holiday season don't forget to do all you can to support your local merchants.
Happy Holiday's
And on that note, thank you to the businesses who supported our Christmas Greetings section. Your support made the publication a success. I hope the readers will enjoy all the cute letters from the area kindergartners, and the greetings from the many businesses and pastors.
Thank you again to the staff at the Argus who worked so hard putting the item together.
They really believe in what they are doing and put all of themselves into each publication.
To all of you I wish you a Merry Christmas from my family, myself and of course, all of us here at The Caledonia Argus.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
