The Caledonia gymnastics team hosted a strong Pine Island team on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Warriors posted a 120.8 to Pine Island's 139.25.
Coach Paul Stevens said that the team had a good meet against the strongest team they will face this year. "Pine Island was the section champs last year and look very good again this year," said Stevens. "We are slowly making improvements ourselves.
"Vault is staying very consistent, but this is one event we don't get to practice with a full runway. We would need to use part of the wrestling gym to get a full approach in. That doesn't happen very often.
"Bar scores improved. Skylar Schoh was moved up to varsity and her score helped to improve our team score. She is a seventh grader and is gaining confidence every day in the things she does. Samantha Wermager continues to lead us, but just not in every event.
"Kaley Cross was our top beam person and is consistent there. Over all, if the girls continue to try to improve, that is all Jackie and I can ask. Jackie and I are very thankful to some ex gymnasts who have been coming in to volunteer for us. Janet Miller and Danielle Adamson have been showing up a lot in the gym and the girls are learning a lot from them as well."
In vault Samantha Wermager took second place with a score of 8.75. Courtney Gran took fourth place with 8.25. Emily Klug posted a 7.925; Ally Sheehan 7.85, and Kaley Cross 7.25. Caledonia scored 32.775 to Pine Island's 34.425. In JV Jennifer DeWitt scored a 7.4; Chelsey Vickerman 7.150 and Skylar Schoh 7.1.
In floor exercise Caledonia posted a 30.7 to Pine Island's 35.475. Samantha Wermager scored 8.3. Kaley Cross scored 8.125; Courtney Gran 7.625; Emily Klug 6.65 and Allison Zard 5.35. In JV Mariah Stone scored 6; Matison Scanlan 5.7; Cheryl Kirchner 5; Kambrea Mahr 5; and Mackenzie Moen 4.9.
On balance beam Caledonia scored 29.4 to PI's 35.15. Kaley Cross led the Warriors with 7.8. Samantha Wermager scored 7.75; Courtney Gran 7.15, Ally Sheehan 6.7 and Emily Klug 4.975. In JV, Mariah Stone scored a 4.1 and Matison Scanlan 3.6 for Caledonia.
On uneven bars the Warriors scored 27.925 to Pine Island's 34.2. Samantha Wermager took third with 8.55. Kaley Cross scored 7.675; Courtney Gran 5.95; Skylar Schoh 5.75; and Emily Klug 5.15. In JV Mariah Stone scored a 3.2.
In the all around Caledonia garnered four of the top seven places with Samantha Wermager leading for Caledonia with a third place 33.35. Kaley Cross scored 30.85; Courtney Gran 28.975; and Emily Klug 24.7.
Correction: Caledonia's team score last week was 118.1, not 112.425. The school's gymnastics program has been having computer problems and one of the floor scores that should have been counted was not. The computer was acting up again last Thursday, so team results were not announced at the meet.
Next: Caledonia travels to Byron on Thursday, Dec. 20.
