Chief Deputy Scott Yeiter begins duty

Long-time La Crescent policeman Scott Yeiter was shopping for clothes Friday afternoon in Minneapolis.

He was buying items khaki in color: khaki shirts, khaki pants, khaki socks ... you get the idea.

Yeiter is exchanging all his policeman blue for khaki now that he is Houston Countyís new chief deputy.

Heíll be overseeing ten deputies plus office staff for newly installed Sheriff Doug Ely, who chose Yeiter for the job.

Because Yeiter was a patrol officer and investigator in La Crescent, heíll be learning new jobs at the county: jail, dispatch and the delivery of civil papers.

Besides concentrating on day-to-day operations at the Houston County Law Enforcement Center, he said he plans to spend more time building relationships with other law enforcement agencies and social service agencies.

Yeiter is a La Crescent native, who lives there with now his wife, Sarah, and children Anna, age 11; Emily, age 9 and Alex, age 6. He took police training at Rochester and worked as an officer in Spring Grove and La Crescent.

The Houston County Board on Feb. 6 set Yeiterís salary at $61,635, which is 12.5% above the annual base rate of $54,797 for the captain/chief investigator position.
