A La Crescent business may be the first business in Houston County to take advantage of Minnesotaís JOB-Z program.

At Tuesdayís County Board meeting, Economic Development Coordinator Joyce Iverson told commissioners that a La Crescent business has contacted her to begin the application process for the JOB-Z program. Iverson didnít reveal the name of the company.

Minnesotaís Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOB-Z) is a Minnesota program that provides local and state tax exemptions to new and expanding businesses. Itís goal is to stimulate economic development activity in Minnesota.

Iverson said the business is looking expand and wants to relocate from the city of La Crescent to La Crescent Township. The company currently rents a building from La Crosse-McCormick. It has 30 full time employees at an average wage of $13.50 plus benefits. The business is looking to purchase 10 acres of land that is already zoned commercial/industrial in the township.

JOB-Z began in 2003 and will expire in 2015. No business in Houston County has yet to take advantage of the program.

Commissioners also approved hiring of Tina Meyer as a full-time social worker. Her position will be reviewed at the end of six months.

Kraabel is on staff at Winona State University. The task force is an advisory committee on current needs and trends in healthcare for Houston County.
