BOYS BASKETBALL: Turnovers hurt Caledonia in a 81-75 boys basketball loss to Winona Cotter on January 20.
The Warriors led 44-34 in the second half. "Then Cotter came up with pressure." Caledonia coach Josh Diersen said. "There were costly turnovers that led to layups." In other games last week, the Warriors beat Lewiston-Altura 56-41 on January 16 on the road, then came home to beat Plainview-Elgin-Millville 85-69 two nights later.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: It was a busy week for the Warriors who played Lewiston-Altura Tuesday, January 16; Plainview-Elgin- Millville Thursday, January 18; and Winona Cotter Saturday, January 20.
Caledonia 63, L-A 50
Lewiston-Altura came to Caledonia on Tuesday, January 16 to be handed a loss by the Warriors.
Caledonia 58, P-E-M 51
Caledonia traveled to Plainview for a game with Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Thursday, January 18 for another win to move the Warriorís record to 15-1.
Cotter 53, Caledonia 43
Caledonia had a big match with #1 Cotter in Winona on Saturday, January 20. The loss to Cotter put Caledoniaís record at 15-2.
WRESTLING: Chatfield took an early lead then held on to beat Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove 36-22 in wrestling on January 19 in Chatfield.
The Gophers led 30-3 after Matt Merrick beat Josh Gavin 7-4 at 145.
Warrior coach Jay Tolleson inserted Cullen Becker at 152, and moved the other regulars up a weight. The strategy paid off with five straight wins, but it was too late for a meet victory.
GYMNASTICS: The Caledonia/Spring Grove gymnastics team returned from Pine Island on January 19 with a disappointing 126.15. The home team scored an impressive 142.4. Coach Paul Stevens described the meet as so-so.
"Both (assistant coach) Jackie and I feel that the girls need to get a little more intense about what they are doing," said Stevens. "Pine Island has an awesome team and has gotten a lot better than the last time we saw them."
