Phyllis M. Bakkum
Phyllis M. Bakkum, 89, of La Crosse, died Monday, January 1, 2007 at the Hillview Care Center.
She was born December 11, 1917, in Caledonia to Peter and Agnes (Peterson) Schiltz. Phyllis taught country school in Caledonia before marrying James Bakkum on June 2, 1941 in Caledonia. The couple opened the Pancake House restaurant in La Crosse at Fourth and Jay in 1966. Phyllis retired at the age of 80. After retirement her hobbies were cooking, gardening, and volunteering at the Moose Lodge.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Les) Alberthal and Jamie Page, both of Granbury Texas; two sons, Larry (Molly) of Los Osos, California, and Scott (Chris) of La Crosse; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Harriet Stapleton of Caledonia and Milda Wardenburg of Novato, California; a brother, Matthew (Pat) Schiltz of Atlanta, Georgia; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Schiltz of Madison, Wisconsin and Janice (Lou) Srdich of La Crosse.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Thomas; two sisters, Mary Ann Logan and Kay OíHara; and two brothers, Cecil Schiltz and Gene Schiltz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007, at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral-Marian Chapel, La Crosse. The Reverend Michael Gorman will officiate. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society.
