County spent $415,000 in 2006 to house prisoners out of county

Houston County spent $415,586 to transport and house prisoners out of county in 2006. Houston County Jail Administrator Mark Schiltz provided figures to the Houston County Board during the June 26 meeting. The board had requested a report that included the costs for housing and transporting prisoners to other counties.

According to Schiltzí report, in 2006 the county spent approximately-

ï$289,315 housing adult males out of county;

ï$42,445 housing adult females out of county;

ï$56,089 transporting adult males;

ï$13,555 transporting adult females;

ï$12,295 transporting juvenile males;

ï$1,887 transporting juvenile females.

From Jan. 1 to June 15, 2007 the county has spent approximately-

ï$49,920 housing adult males out of county;

ï$25,870 housing adult females out of county;

ï$16,597 transporting adult males;

ï$5,602 transporting adult females;

ï$4,807 transporting juvenile males;

ï$500 transporting female juveniles.

Schiltzí report also included the number of adult males and females housed out of county for 2005 and 2004. The average daily cost for a prisoner housed out of county (excluding transportation costs) is $65 per day. Those figures included:

ï2005 adult male days- 2,795 for a cost of $181,675;

ï2005 adult female days- 740 for a cost of $48,100;

ï2004 adult male days- 1,148 for a cost of $74,620;

ï2004 adult female days- 551 for a cost of $35,815.

During the first six month of 2007 the county has utilized jails in five other counties to house prisoners. They included: Goodhue, Olmsted, Winona, and Fillmore in Minnesota and Allamakee County in Iowa.
