GIrls second in section track

The Caledonia/Spring Grove girls track team finished second at the section meet in Stewartville on May 29 and will send several of its athletes to the state meet this weekend.
Samantha Wermager qualified for state in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. She finished second in both events behind Maggie May of GMLOS.
Wermagerís time in the 100 hurdles was 16.20. Coach Paul Stevens noted that she hit a hurdle in the race and nearly fell, so to finish second was a feat. She broke her own school record in the 300 and finished the race in 47.34, an improvement of .40 seconds over her time in the preliminaries. The previous school record was set in 2002 by Kari Schwirtz.
The 4 x 200 relay team is also headed for the state meet after taking first in that event by more than two seconds.
The team of Sarah Colleran, Molly Furlong, Megan King and Ashley King finished the event in 1:47.41. Coach Stevens noted that their time was the third-best time for C/SG.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Molly Furlong, Laquita Becker, Courtney Gran and Ashley King took fourth.
Two athletes missed a state trip by just one place.
In the 100 meter, Molly Furlong had her best time of the season with a 13.17. She missed her chance at state by just one place. Laquita Becker had a 13.62 in that event.
In the 200 meter, Ashley King came in third, missing a trip to state by one place, Her time was 27.02. Sarah Colleran was seventh at 27.60.
The 4 x 800 team of Michaela Neuzil, Stormy Ottm Bobbi Jo Schuttemeier and Richel Mehus came in ninth.
Samantha Wermger and Katie Wiste were fourth and eighth in the long jump. Wiste took third in the triple jump with a distance of 34 ft. 0.1.75 in. Wermager was fourth at 33 ft. 9 in.
In the shot put, Molly Schaller threw 345 ft. 3.5 inches for seventh place.
She was ninth in the discus.
"The girls were very excited about placing second," said coach Stevens. "We had a lot of other place finishers that contributed to the final score."
Preliminaries and field events for the state meet begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hamline University in St. Paul. Finals on Saturday begin at 3 p.m.
