Caledonia Area School Board member Barb Hurley resigned from her post in late February, citing health concerns.
"My health has not been the best lately, and I feel that I would like to take as much stress out of it as possible," Hurley wrote in a Feb. 22 e-mail to School Board members and district officials.
Hurley had been absent from the School Board meetings on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5, and did not attend the meeting Feb. 26 at which the School Board accepted her resignation.
Hurley had the remainder of 2007 and all of 2008 left in her term. The School Board, which must appoint someone to fill Hurleyís seat, has initiated a recruitment process.
"Itís about as popular as pulling teeth, but itís gotta be done," School Board Chair Naomi Fruechte said of the recruitment process.
A two-person committee ó consisting of Fruechte and School Board member Charlie Wray ó was formed at the Feb. 26 meeting to start looking at potential candidates.
Once the committee comes up with one or more candidates, those names will be brought before the School Board to vote on, Wray said.
Hurley was serving as clerk on the board, and at the Feb. 26 meeting School Board member Jean Meyer volunteered to fill the position. Meyer was appointed clerk by a 5-0 vote. The clerk is responsible for signing documents on behalf of the School Board.
In tendering her resignation, Hurley thanked School Board members and district officials "for allowing me the opportunity to do my part as a member of this school district."
Hurley said she feels that "the district has grown leaps and bounds within the past few years, maybe not population wise, but environmentally."
