Softball team has intense schedule

The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team had a hectic schedule last week, and is in for more of the same this week as the end of the season draws nearer.

The Spring Grove/ Caledonia Lions softball team went only five innings against the Mabel-Canton Cougars on April 23 and came away with a 13-0 win.
Jordan OíHeron made the first run of the game, then Karla Tweeten blasted a grand slam with two outs and the bases loaded for four more runs.
In the second inning, Jane Pettit hit a home run with two on base for 3 RBI. A total of four runs were scored in the second inning,and another four were made in the fifth inning.
Theresa Ellenz hit a triple in the fifth, and Cassie Gran was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.
The Lionsí 13 runs came on 9 hits. They had one error and seven left on base.
Mabel-Canton had two hits, made 3 errors and left four on base.
"We hit the ball really well," asid coach Michelle Anderson. "We also did a good job of running the bases. Our sophomore pitcher, Cassie Gran, had really good control of her pitches."
Lions beat by ëCanes
The Lions met stiff competition in the Houston Hurricanes on Wednesday, April 25, and were handed their first conference loss of the season.
Houston came out of the gate swinging and scored trhee runs in the first inning. The game continued with no more runs until the fifth inning when SG/C scored its only run. Houston ended the game by adding another run in the seventh inning for a final score of 4-1.
"Houstonís extra base hits were huge in the first inning," said Lions coach Michelle Anderson. "They got the hits with the runners in scoring position. Great execution and clutch hitting."
SG/C had 11 runners left on base.
"We left too many runners in scoring position on base in the fith, sixth and seventh inning," saud Anderson. "Our bats were too passive in the early innings; we musst be more aggressive."
Jordan OíHeron was 2 for 4. The team had a total of 10 hits.
Pitcher Cassie Gran struck out five batters and allowed eight hits.
Lions shut out L-P
SG/C scored eight runs on eight hits against Lyle-Pacelli on Thursday for an 8-0 shutout.
Theresa Ellenz had a home run in the second and was 2 for 3. Maria Betz hit a triple in the third inning, and Jordan OíHeron was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Jane Pettit pitched the winning game and allowed just one hit.
Lions take on Lancers
In its fourth game of the week, SG/C met the La Crescent Lancers in La Crescent and won 4-2.
The Lions scored two runs in the second inning and two n the fourth and were up 4-0 when the Lancers came back in the fifth inning to score 2 runs.
Cassie Gran was 3 for 4, hit a double and had 2 RBI. Theresa Ellenz was 3 for 4. Jane Pettit, Jordan OíHeron and Miranda Lager each had two hits.
Cassie Gran was the winning pitcher and allowed only three hits and struck out four batters. SG/C had 14 hits.
Three games this week
The girls play three games this week.
On Tuesday, the Lions met Lyle Pacelli in Austin, and they have a rematch against Houston in Houston on Thursday. On Friday, they meet Chatfield in Caledonia.
