Memorial Day services scheduled
Memorial Day services will take place throughout Houston County Saturday, May 26 and Monday, May 28.
The following is a list of events taking place in the Caledonia area.
A county-wide Memorial Day program will be held at the Veteransí Memorial in front of the Houston County Courthouse in Caledonia on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m.
Ron Vix, U.S. Navy Retired from Spring Grove, will be the keynote speaker. All American Legion and VFW posts in the county will be providing rifles at the salute to the dead. The names of veterans who have passed away since May 2006 will be read.
Caledonia
There will be a memorial Day Service Monday, May 28 at the Caledonia High School Auditorium. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 191. Emcee will be Commander Harold Heaney.
Scholarship awards will be given to graduating senior by the Legion and Auxiliary at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome.
Brownsville
A Memorial Day service will be held May 28 at the Catholic Cemetery by the VFW Post and Auxiliary beginning at 10 a.m.
At 10:45 a program will be held at the Brownsville Community center. The guest speaker is Erik Braun from La Crescent. He returned late last year after serving the U.S. Army in the Iraq/Kuwait War zones.
There will also be a special military display about the Army Infantry by Fred Chatlos from Kansas.
Following the program, the march and service at the river, a potluck dinner will be held at the Community Center. The public is welcome.
In case of inclement weather, the cemetery service and march to the river will be cancelled. The Community Center service and dinner will be held as scheduled.
New Albin
On Saturday, May 26 at 2 p.m. the New Albin Area Veterans will be dedicating a Veterans Memorial to those who have served our area.
The memorial is to honor those who have served our country from the New Albin, Freeburg, Reno, Caledonia and Brownsville areas, including those who were killed in action. Their names have been forever recorded on the monument.
A Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m. at the New Albin Community Center. All Veterans, VFW members, ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies will meet a half hour before the service at the center. Please bring your flags. After the program military taps will be held at the Community Center and also at the City Cemetery. Everyone is welcome.
Hokah
Memorial Day services will begin with the placing of the wreaths at 8:15 a.m. at the Root River Bridge and Convent Cemetery on Monday. The parade will be at 9 a.m. starting at City Hall and proceeding to the city park. Ceremonies will then be held at the two cemeteries.
Spring Grove
Services for Memorial Day will be held Monday, May 28, beginning at 10 a.m. A parade will proceed at 9:45 a.m. from the school to the park. The Spring Grove High School Band will perform several selections.
Lt. Commander Christian Myrah, who completed active duty in the U.S. Navy in 2006, will be the keynote speaker.
Houston
Memorial Day services will be held in the park on Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m. The Houston High School band and choir will perform. A chicken que, sponsored by Post 423 and Boy Scout Troop 53 will be held following the program in the park.
