Caledonia/Spring Grove junior Zach Gran posted a field record in the 100 meter dash at La Crescentís "May Soiree" last Tuesday. Granís 11.16 beat PEMís Jonny Weinrich, who has been one of his top challengers this season. Derek Lager finished fourth and Andy Bauer was sixth in the event.

In the 200 meter dash, it was the same 1-2 finish with both runners recording times that ranked in the top 10 scores ever recorded on this field. Granís winning time was 22.81, just .07 seconds off the track record. Eddie Hodges finished fifth for the Warriors in this event at 23.91.

Andy Bauer won the 400 meter dash in a time of 54.13 while eighth grader Mitch Reiser finished third. Brad Hesse was fourth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:14.09.

"I like his more aggressive approach style in this event," coach Carl Fruechte said.

In the 1600 meter run, Ryan Mehus was third in a time of 5:03.25. "That is not his usual distance," Fruechte said of Mehus. "He had to leave early to participate in another event and he just wanted to enter some race."

In the 110 meter hurdles, Jesse Christian was sixth and Nick Wagner was eighth. Fruechte complimented Christianís showing, "It was his best time of the year." And, in the 300 meter hurdles, Christian was seventh and Wagner was tenth.

The Warriors dominated the 100 meter and 200 meter 4-man relay events. In the 4x100 relay, the team of Cody Peterson, Isaac Fruechte, Derek Lager and Zach Gran won. Another Warrior relay team, the ëBí of Josh Gran, Reiser, Zach Lechner and Alex Diersen was fifth. A third relay (ëCí) squad finished seventh. Members of that team were Lonnie Hudson, Justin Hesse, Royal Sonsalla, and Elijah Heberlein.

In the 4x200 event, the squad of Andy Bauer, Fruechte, Lager, and Casey Bauer were the winners. The same group of runners from the 4x100 Warrior ëBí team also finished fifth while the ëCí squad finished tenth. There, Andrell Hudson replaced Sonsalla. The C/SG 4 x 400 meter relay team finished seventh.

Heberlein finished sixth in the high jump. "Elijah is just a ninth grader and he has done well for us," Fruechte said. The Warriorsí Jim Costigan was eighth in the pole vault. "Jim is only an eighth grader and he loves this event," Fruechte said.

Derek Beier was second in the long jump while Alex Diersen was ninth. "Derek is regaining his form," Fruechte said. Beier was fourth in the triple jump.

Andrell Hudson was second in the shot put and his brother, Lonnie, was seventh.

Fruechte expressed his happiness with his teamís performance. "We dominated the sprints against some of the best competition we will meet in the sub-section and section. We had windy and cool conditions, too."

Sub-section

meet Thursday

The sub-section 1A track meet will be Thursday at La Crescent High School. The field events begin at 4:30 p.m. and the running events begin at 5:00 p.m.

Coach Carl Fruechte reported that the top three finishers in each event would advance to the section meet. Also, those athletes who exceed the criteria for events will also advance, regardless of their placement.
