A win and two losses for Lions

The Spring Grove/Caledonia Lions softball team was dealt a setback last week with back to back losses on the road. The girls came back to beat Chatfield in Caledonia on Friday, 16-4.

Short game against Chatfield

The Lions met Chatfield on Friday for an abbreviated game. The game was called at 16-4 in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Chatfield had two runs in the first inning, and Spring Grove/Caledonia made sevens runs in their first at-bat. Jordan OíHeron hit a home run, and Miranda Lager and Karla Tweeten hit back to back triples in the first inning.

The Lions added four more runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning and five in the fourth. The Gophers scored another two runs in the third inning.

Jordan Oíheron was 2 for 3, Liby Augedahl was 4 for 4 with two doubles and 3 RBI, Cassie Gran was 3 for 4, Maria Betz went 2 for 4 and Jane Pettit was 2 for 3.

The Lions had 19 hits, one error and left five on the bases. The Gophers had 8 hits.

Loss to Pacelli

Against Lyle-Pacelli of Austin, the Lionsí bats were no match for the pitching of Nicki Svoboda, who struck out 13 batters and allowed just one hit. Cassie Gran took the loss for the Lions, allowing five hits for two runs. The final score was 2-0. L-Pís first run was scored in the fifth inning, and another came in the sixth.

Cassie Gran had the lone hit for the Lions in the top of the seventh.

Another loss to Houston

The Lions met a tough Houston team on Thursday, May 3, and came away with a 7-3 loss.

The ëCanes had three runs in the second inning, and the Lions evened the score with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Houston answered with four more runs and the Lions couldnít come back.

Pitcher Jane Pettit allowed 12 hits and struck out five batters.

The Lions had six hits.

Libby Augedahl was 2 for 4, and Cassie Gran, Jane Pettit, Maria Betz and Karla Tweeten all had singles.

The team now stands at 3-3 in the conference.

Up this week

The Lions met Glenville-Emmons on Monday and Southland on Tuesday. On Thursday, the girls play at the Caledonia city fields at 4:30 against Fillmore Central. The B team plays at the high school fields at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, SG/C travels to La Crescent for a softball invitational.
