Caledonia/Spring Grove boys track junior sprinter Zach Gran won both events at the Rushford Boosters track tournament last Tuesday and the La Crescent Johnny Cash Classic on Friday.
Gran won at Rushford with a time of 11.24 in the 100 and 22.93 in the 200. At La Crescent, he recorded times of 11.31 and 23.14, respectively. The La Crescent times may have been slower, but C/SG boys track coach Carl Fruechte observed there was wind and rain on Friday at La Crescent.
At Rushford, team mate Derek Lager was fifth in the 100 and seventh in the 200.
The C/SG 4 x 100 meter relay also finished first. That group had Eddie Hodges on the first leg, followed by Isaac Fruechte, then Lager, and Gran on the anchor. They had a time of 45.19. Most importantly, the team finished ahead of FC/L.
The 4 x 200 relay team of Hodges, Fruechte, Lager, and David Jergenson was third. In the 4 x 400 meter relay team, the group of Derek Beier, Jergenson, Nick Wagner and Bauer was ninth.
Beier was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 34.5 feet. Andrell Hudson was 4th in the shot put at 47 1/4 feet.
"We had a good meet against real tough competition," coach Fruechte said. No team scores were kept. Fruechte said most of the teams will compete with the Warriors in the district and section meets.
Andy Bauer finished third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.44. "We are real excited for Andy," coach Fruechte said. "Coach Wade has really helped Andy become a more aggressive runner."
Ryan Mehus was sixth in the 800 meter run. Wagner was 11th in the 110 hurdles and 13th in the 300 meter hurdles.
Hodges, Hudson, Beier add
firsts at La Crescent meet
The name of the La Crescent meet changes each year. "They select a theme with the idea of injecting some fun into this," coach Fruechte explained. Among the novelties was the playing of Johnny Cash songs during the meet.
The 4 x 100 meter relay team won its event in 45.87 as did the 4 x 200 meter team with a winning time of 136.26. The 4 x 400 meter relay squad of Jesse Christian, Beier, Mehus and Brad Hesse was fourth.
Hodges also captured the long jump title with a leap of 19-8 while Beier was third. Jergenson was sixth.
Another champion was Beier who was first in the triple jump. Hudson won the shot put. A new member of the squad, and new to this event, was Jacob Schutte, who was seventh. "It was his first meet and it is his first year," coach Fruechte said of Schutte. "I know the kids are happy to have Jacob on the team."
In the 100 meter race, Lager was fourth. Bauer was third in the 200 meter dash.
7th, 8th, 9th graders
compete in jr. high
meet at Chatfield
The Caledonia seventh, eighth, and ninth graders competed in a junior high meet at Chatfield on Friday.
The boys ninth grade team totaled 18 points in the seven team field.
The 4 x 200 relay team had the best finish, a second place.
Justin Hesse was sixth in the 100 meter dash and Carl Denstad was eighth. Elijah Heberlein was third in the high jump at 4-10 feet.
Tyler Johnson was sixth in the shot put and Casey Klug was seventh. They threw distances of 35-02 and 34-11.5, respectively.
In the eighth grade competition, the boys were second. Mitch Reiser won three events.
Reiser won the 100 meter dash at 12.75 while Josh Gran was right behind at 12.83. In the 400 meter, Reiser won at 58.20 while Lochner was third just .58 seconds back. Reiser also won the long jump at 15-11.Ý
Zach Lochner was first in the 200 meter dash at 26.07 followed by Gran at 26.97.ÝÝ
The Warriors 4 x 100 meter relay team were winners, too.
In the high jump, Lochner was second and Gran was third. Lochner tied for the high jump but the winner had fewer jumps.
Jim Costigan was second in the pole vault.
Nick Schaller was seventh in the discus throw and sixth in the shot put.
The Warriors only had counting scores in two events in the seventh grade competition. The 4 x 100 relay team of Connor McCormick, Adam Drenckhahn, Lewis Miller, and Kyle Wermager won. In the 4 x 100 meter relay event, The Warriors were second with a team of McCormick, Miller, Wermager, and Jared Hegge.
Royal Sonsalla was fifth in the 200 meter dash.
