Eugene "Gene" Berns
Eugene "Gene" Joseph Berns, 65, of Postville, Iowa, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa, after a 14-year battle with cancer.
Eugene was born on July 17, 1942, in Postville, Iowa, the son of Leo and Lucille (Koerperick) Berns. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bridgetís Catholic Church in Postville and graduated from Postville High School in 1960. On April 23, 1977, he married Nancy Fetketter at St. Johnís Catholic Church in Caledonia, Minn. Gene farmed his entire life with his dad and brothers Dick and Chuck.
Gene was a member of St. Bridgetís Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council in Postville.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Postville; his children:Kari Berns, Spring Valley, Minn., and Alex (Melissa Fritz) Berns, Postville; three grandchildren; three brothers: Richard (Cindy), Postville; Charles Berns, Postville; and Robert (Kay) Berns, Arlington Heights, Ill.; three sisters: Ann (Robert) Heisler, Dyersville, Iowa; Bobbi (Robert) Smrcina, Dubuque, Iowa; and Mary (Gerald) Gramlich, Waukon, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Bridgetís Catholic Church in Postville, with Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and Fr. Richard Gaul officiating. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, rural Postville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service.
