Good luck at state Warriors

By Daniel McGonigle

As I made my way into the building of the Caledonia high school, the lost look on my face gave it away that I wasnít from these parts. The kindness lavished on me by strangers thus far in my brief time here once again came into play. A passerby quickly assessed the situation and immediately concluded that I was indeed lost. "Can I help you," she asked. A smile came upon my face, "yes, I am looking for the gym."

The camera around my neck probably also gave it away that I am with the paper. She couldíve also read the story in the Argus a few weeks back introducing me to everyone. At any rate, I sensed I made her comfortable enough so any resservations she might have had that I was there to dig through peopleís lunch boxes in the hope I might find a cookie, quickly dissapeared. She motioned with her left hand and pointed almost straight in front of the position we were standing. I didnít catch her name, but I did thank her.

I was at the school to take pictures of the girls basketball team for an upcoming winter sports preview section we have coming up. When I peaked in the gym window, you can imagine my surprise when I saw the football team, in full pads, doing their walk-through.

No, I havenít been on the moon or in some far, far away land known as Granite Falls, I do know the Warriors are still playing competetive tackle football, I just didnít expect theyíd be doing it inside.

The secret to their success is out, I thought. I bet theyíve been practicing indoors all season long. I bet the walls and the bleachers and the wood beneath their feet have only made them feel as if they were caged up and when they are finally released into the wild (or in this case the football field) the Warrior in each of them is unleashed and their mighty wrath continues to take them onward, deeper and deeper into the season.

Or maybe they simply were indoors doing walk throughs, putting the finishing touches on their offensive and defensive scemes.

At any rate, whatever it was, it worked. The Warriors, and you donít need me to tell you this, are going to play in the championship game the day after Thanksgiving.

It is always a fun and exciting thing to have your sports teams doing well in a small community. It is fun to walk down the street and see all of the cars with messages of good will scribbled on windshields, and businesses proudly displaying their Warrior pride.

It is obvious to this outsider, who is still learning where everything is located, that win or lose, the community of Caledonia is behind their Warriors 120 percent. Good luck at state!
