"We controlled the game the whole way, once we took the lead by eight early in the first half, we never let them get closer than that the rest of the way, leading by as many as 19 points midway through the second half," said head coach Scott Sorenson of his teamís opening 59-46 win against Stewartville.
The coach admits his team did come out a bit rusty, but still kept the pressure on when they needed to.
"We played well at times and not so well at times," he said. "It was a typical first game. I was very happy with the girlsí performance. Considering all that has been going on they really seemed focused and ready to play."
The Warriors were a bit short handed as two key returning players were out of the line-up with injuries.
"Although we played the game with two returning starters (Alecia Fruechte and Megan King) on the bench due to injuries, I felt the girls really stepped up when they needed to. We led at half time 34-18, and never really looked back. Everyone that played did an excellent job working through some of the kinks."
Sorenson was pleased with how one of his seniors responded coming back from injury.
"Senior Sarah Colleran looked really good coming back from her injury last year, she looked as fast if not faster than she has been," he said. "Sarah ended with eight points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists."
The coach also noted that Brianna Vick really stepped up in her first varsity start, although "she spent much of the second half on the bench due to foul trouble. Vick ended the night with nine points and five rebounds and "did several of the little things that will make us a good team," added Sorenson.
Cassie Gran was the leading scorer with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also had eight offensive rebounds.
"That comes from heart, reading the ball and not settling till she has good position," said Sorenson. "Laquita Becker ended the night with 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the free throw line.
"She was aggressive taking the ball to the basket," said Sorenson. "Libby Augedahl ended the night scoreless, but added four steals. She did spend much of the first half on the bench due to foul trouble. Jenna Burmester played very well, hitting one three pointer and playing excellent defense. Theresa Ellenz played well.Although she did not score, she does the little things. She ended the night with four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
"Aly Meyer stepped up in her first varsity action to score four points when we needed someone because of foul trouble.
"It was nice to get the win, but we will need to execute better and eliminate many of the turnovers if we want to get to get where we feel we should be," said the coach. "We ended the night with 26 turnovers, which will not get it done, but I chalk that up to the week of practice we had and the first game jitters."
Because of the success of the football team, the Warriors game against Triton was cancelled on Friday night, but the game against Stewartville was a good early season gauge for what the Warriors will need to improve upon for the next game.
Up next for the girls basketball team is a Nov. 30 home game vs. Fillmore Central. Information from Tuesday nightsí contest vs. Chatfield will be featured in next weekís edition of the Caledonia Argus.
