Caledonia High Schoolís girls soccer team continued its drive to tournament play beating Dover-Eyota 5-2 last Thursday. It was Parents Night and there was much to smile about. The Warriors had a 13-1 record going into Monday nightís game with Plainview-Elgin-Millville.Ý
In addition to the win over a D-E team that has been improving, the Warriorsí Sarah Colleran broke a school record with two goals that pushed her total on the season to 30. Colleran had 28 goals last year to tie her with previous record holder Brianna Polus.
Also scoring for the Warriors were Whitney Frank, Theresa Ellenz, and Erica Myhre. Assists were credited to Megan Schmitz who had two and Colleran had one assist.
"I felt we really stepped it up in the second half," coach Sue Link said. The Warriors led at the break 2-0 with both of Colleranís goal coming in that time frame.
Again, it was a strong offensive performance. The Warriors had 28 shots on goal while Dover-Eyota had nine shots on the net.
"Dover-Eyota is a physical team and we were ready to accept the challenge. We were ready to play," Link said of her team.
"Everyone had a chance to play and I was pleased with what my non-starters showed," said Link. Link says she has observed that the skill levels among the players has narrowed. "I have more depth on my bench," she said.
Link cited Rachel Strub as an example. "She came up off the JV and showed a varsity level of play. I like the way she is quick to the ball," the coach said of the forward.
That small difference between the playersí skills makes for good scrimmages, Link believes.Ý
The only thing disappointing about last week is that the much awaited game with La Crescent was canceled at the last minute. The Warriors were notified of the cancellation because of lightning and continued rain in La Crescent.
Warriors will host
game on Saturday
The Caledonia High School girlsí soccer team will likely host a second round game on Saturday.Ý
The game will be played at either 11 a.m. or 1 p.m.
This will occur if the Warriors are seeded first or second. The Warriors have the second best record in the section.
