Gordon L. McCallson
Gordon L. McCallson, 85, formerly of Caledonia, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Augustana Health Care Center, Hastings, Minn.
He was born May 12, 1922 in Newburg, Minn., the youngest of 11 children to Albert Christ and Clara Augusta (Erickson) McCallson. Gordon grew up on the family farm and enlisted in the U.S. Army after his mother agreed to sign for him. On August 2, 1942 he married Elizabeth Frances Barbara Jacke at the Ft. Snelling Chapel in Minneapolis. Gordon was stationed in Greenland during WWII where he built weather stations.
After returning from the service, the couple moved to Whalen, Minn., where they lived until 1950. Gordon and Elizabeth then moved to the Twin Cities where Gordon was employed with Ford Motor Company in St. Paul (Highland Park) for 29 years.
After his retirement in 1982, they moved to Caledonia and on March 15, 2002, Elizabeth preceded Gordon in death. Gordon then moved to Oak Ridge Assisted Living in Hastings on November 1, 2002 and eventually became a resident at Augustana Health Care Center.
Survivors include four children, Judith Ann McCallson of Minneapolis, Jerome Gordon (Sherri) McCallson of Hastings, Minn., John (Beatrice) McCallson of Cypress, Calif., and Jean Marie (Shams) Din of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Louise Newhouse of La Crescent; and one brother, Elmer (Alice) McCallson of La Crosse.
In addition to his wife, Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Paul in infancy; four sisters; and four brothers.
Memorial services will be Friday, October 12, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia. Rev. Jeanne Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Newburg United Methodist Church Cemetery, Newburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
