Warrior volleyball lose to Chatfield, defeat L-A

Caledonia was home for both matches last week against
Chatfield and Lewiston-Altura. The loss to Chatfield and the win against Lewiston-Altura moved their conference record to 6-2 and their overall record to 21-4-1.

Caledonia 1, Chatfield 3

Caledonia hosted Chatfield on Tuesday, Oct. 2, losing to the Gophers in four close games: 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, and 24-26.

"Chatfield really played a nice match in a couple of different ways," said Caledonia coach Scott Koepke. "First they played amazing defense, digging many balls that teams havenít usually been popping up. We still hit .193 as a team which is not a bad number, so it showed their defense was excellent.

"Second, they passed the ball very well out of serve receive. They had a great night handling our serves. Hats off to Sara and her girls; they played a great match.

"There were a few servers giving them fits. Libby had 6 aces, Alecia 3, and Aly 2. Amber Sorenson led our team with a .350 hitting percentage on 8 kills. Alecia hit .263 with 12 kills and Megan hit .250 also having 12 kills. Very good numbers.

"Losses are never easy, but this gave us an oppurtunity to look very closely at our team and the girls have been working very hard to improve in different areas after the match. Weíve learned many things from this match that are going to help us as we continue our season."

Statistics: Cassie Gran had 15 set assists, 4 kills, 10 kills, 1 ace block, and was 14 for 16 serving; Alecia Fruechte 12 kills, 8 digs, 3 ace serves, and was 18 for 18 serving; Megan King 12 kills, 9 digs, 1 ace block, and was 9 for 10 serving; Amber Ideker 8 kills, 7 digs, and was 11 for 11 serving; Amber Sorenson 8 kills and 1 dig; Libby Augedahl 4 kills, 9 digs, 3 set assists, 6 ace serves, and was 24 for 24 serving; Aly Meyer 1 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace block, 2 ace serves and was 7 for 8 serving; Laquita Becker 3 digs, and Jenna Schmitz 5 for 6 serving.

Caledonia 3, L-A 0

Caledonia has used only three games to defeat its opponents in more than half of its matches this year. The girls defeated the Cardinals 25-23, 25-23 and 25-20 for the three-game sweep.

Coach Koepke said that his team rebounded nicely after the loss to Chatfield on Tuesday. "We hit .227 as a team with Megan King leading kill percentage at .333 of 6 kills," said Koepke. "She also added 3 blocks. We really took it to them in game two. Aly Meyer was one of the reasons game two went so well. She served 7 of 7 with two aces and had 2 kills hitting .500. Cassie had a nice night getting many excellent sets to our hitters, as well as serving well with 3 aces.

Statistics: Cassie Gran had 23 set assists, 1 kill, 5 digs, 3 ace serves and was 12 for 14 serving; Alecia Fruechte 9 kills, 2 digs, 1 set assist, 1 ace block, 1 ace serve and was 15 for 16 serving; Libby Augedahl 7 kills, 7 digs, 3 set assists, 2 ace serves and was 15 for 15 serving; Amber Sorenson 7 kills and 1 dig; Megan King 6 kills, 7 digs, 1 set assist, 3 ace blocks, and was 10 for 11 serving; Amber Ideker 6 kills, 5 digs, 1 ace serve, and was 8 for 9 serving; Aly Meyer 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 ace block, 2 ace serves, and was 7 for 7 serving; Laquita Becker 4 digs.

Next: Caledonia traveled to St. Charles Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Warriorsí last home match of the season is Thursday, Oct. 16 against Rushford-Peterson.

"The 2007 volleyball coaches and players would like to thank everyone who contributed so generously to our serve-a-thon," said Koepke. "We added another set of junior high uniforms this year and now have sets of uniforms for all age groups. We also were able to add excellent quality volleyballs to the program. Thank you all so much!"
