The number-one seeded Lourdes Eagles ended the Warrior boys soccer season last week in the semi-finals of the Section 1A play-off. The host team Eagles topped the fifth-seeded Warriors 3-1.
The Eagles scored first on the rain-soaked field when Warrior goalie Isaac Schiltz slipped in the mud and went down, leaving the net wide open for an easy Lourdes score. The Eagles took the lead at the six minute mark of the first half.
The Warriors played the Eagles even for the rest of the first half, and had a number of shots on goal, according to coach Tom Krinke, but they just couldnít get the ball past the Eagle goalie.
The Eagles made it 2-0 midway through the second half, but the Warriors fought right back. They scored with 10 minutes left in the game when Brad Hesse hit Maros Zelenak on a crossing pass to pull within one goal, 2-1.
"That goal really got our kids fired up," Krinke said. "They really put the pressure on Lourdes. I thought we had a good chance of tying the game up."
But a long kick by the Eagles that got past the CHS defender when he slipped in the much, gave Lourdes a one-one-one situation against the Warriorís goalie. Schiltz gave it his best, but the Lourdes forward got the ball past the CHS goalie to make the score 3-1 with less than five minutes left in the game.
"Once they got that third goal, we were done," Krinke said. "The kids were so up for the game against La Crescent, but they have a hard time believing they can beat Lourdes. When we scored to pull within one goal, we had a chance. There was fire in their eyes. If we could have put another score together right then, I think we could have won."
The Warriors finished the season with a 10-5-2 record. Krinke said it was a very enjoyable season, as this charges developed into a very good team.
"We started kind of slow, not scoring a goal until our fourth game. But once we got things figured out, and learned to play together as a team, we became one of the top teams in our section," Krinke noted.
"We had a young team, with only four kids who had started on a regular basis the year before. And with two foreign exchange students coming in this year, who fit in so well, we really did have a lot of fun and really developed. Iíd like to thank my assistant coach Chris Jandt, who did an excellent job with our junior varsity. And Iím looking forward to next year. We will have a lot of experience coming back. It should be another fun season," Krinke concluded.
