Fire destroys large machine shed on Dierson dairy farm Monday night
Fire fighters from five area fire departments battled a machine shed fire on the John and Karyl Dierson farm, 8245 County Road 3, Caledonia Monday evening. According to Caladonia Fire Chief Chuck Gavin, the call came in around 6 p.m. By the time the first CFD units arrived at the large dairy farm four miles east of town, the entire machine shed was engulfed in flames.
"We could see the smoke, as we left Caledonia," Gavin said. "We knew it was going to take a lot of water, to we called Brownsville for two tankers right away."
Because the large building was made of steel, it was very difficult to get water into the building to extinguish the flames. So fire fighters kept water on adjacent buildings to keep the fire from spreading. Gavin also requested water tanker trucks from Eitzen, Hokah and Spring Grove. He figures over 60,000 gallons of water was used to contain the fire.
Five gravity boxes filled with soybeans, a combine, numerous tractors, other implements, and a number of large square bales were all lost in the fire.
Firemen were on the scene until about 10:30 Monday night.
