The Caledonia High School Warriors made it two in a row last Friday night....not only two wins in a row, but also two blowout shutouts. The Warrior gridders traveled to St. Charles to battle a team that had shutout the Kingsland Knights the week before. They returned home with a convincing 40-0 win over the Saints.
The win improved CHSí record to 2-0. The Warriors have outscored their opponents 76-0 in their first two games.
Following a scoreless opening period that featured turnovers from both teams, the Warriors caught fire in the second period, scoring 14 points. The first score of the game came when Kody Moore connected with Andy Bauer for a 37-yard scoring strike. The Ryan Goetzinger extra point was good, and CHS had a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors made it 14-0 moments before the end of the first half when they marched the ball down the field and Zach Gran pushed in from the one yard line with 14 seconds remaining. Goetzingerís kick was good and the Warriors took a 14-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
CHS blew the game open in the third period when they scored three TDs for a 34-0 lead. Cody Petersen scored on two runs. The first was a 41-yard scamper less than a minute into the third period. Goetzingerís kick was good and the Warrior lead was 21-0. Petersen scored at the 6:30 mark of the third period on a four-yard run. Goetzingerís kick was blocked and the Warrior lead was 27-0.
The Warrior defense had St. Charles pinned deep in their own end of the field when Casey Bauer intercepted a Saints pass and ran it in from nine yards out to make it 33-0. The extra point kick was good to push the CHS lead to 34-0.
The Warrior defense scored a second TD when Goetzinger stepped in front of a Saints pass and ran seven yards in for the score. The St. Charles defense was able to block a second extra point kick of the night and the score remained 40-0.
The Warriors once again dominated both sides of the ball. They racked up 225 yards of offense (119 yards rushing and 106 passing) and held St. Charles to 150 total yards. The CHS defense intercepted the Saints quarterback four times and recovered two fumbles. CHS turned the ball over twice.
Cody Petersen led the Warrior ground game, as he rushed 10 times for 103 yards and two TDs. Alex Schleich picked up 17 yards on 8 carries, Zach Gran had 7 yards on 7 carries and one TD, and Pat Bolduan rushed once for 2 yards.
Kody Moore completed six of 15 passes for 106 yards and one TD. Andy Bauer had one catch for 37 yards and a TD, Gran had two catches for 40 yards, Dustin King had two catches for 14 yards and Kevin Voight had one catch for 15 yards.
The Warriors picked off four St. Charles passes, two were returned for TDs. Casey Bauer and Ryan Goetzinger each had INTs for scores, while Gran and Joey Macejik each had interceptions. Isaac Fruechte and Dustin King each had fumble recoveries and Sam Costigen and Mitch Meiners had quarterback sacks.
Goetzinger had four extra points and punted five times for 192 yards. Andy Bauer returned three punts for 38 yards and Zach Gran returned the only Saint kick-off for 33 yards.
The Warriors will take their 2-0 record into Friday nightís contest against Dover-Eyota, which is also sporting a 2-0 record. The game will be played in Caledonia.
