Decorah Tournament

The Warriors competed in the Decorah tournament on Saturday, Sept. 22 and powered their way through pool play without a loss to become the top seed for the finals.

Scores in pool play were:

South Winneshiek, 2-0: 21-13, 21-13

Decorah, 2-0: 21-17, 21-18

Postville, 2-0: 21-15, 21-15

Clayton Ridge, 2-0: 21-18, 21-11

In the playoffs Caledonia went 1-1 with Mabel Canton, 22-25 and 25-18. Against Wapsie Valley they were 0-2, 19-25 and 24-26.

"The girls got through pool play and had the #1 seed for the tournament which was right where we wanted to be," said Koepke. "Mabel-Canton is ranked 8th in Minnesota class A and Wapsie Valley is the #1 ranked team in Iowa class A so we knew it was going to be a lot of fun.

"The girls came back against MC very strong in the second game. We served very well and played excellent defense. They are a very scrappy team and Kaitlyn Horihan is one of the best middles in the state.

"We then played Wapsie Valley next and we competed very well. We actually had a 23-22 lead and they made a couple of great swings. Their setter was one of the best setters Iíve coached against and the best setter we will probably see this year. I was very proud of the way we adjusted to her attacking and started to pick up her attacks.

"The girls again played very hard and really competed, but just came up a bit short. We hit .179 in the tournament which is not a bad number considering the defense we were up against. It was great competition that will help us as our season continues."

Koepke said that actually itís difficult to say exactly where the team placed in a tournament such as this. "We are only allowed to play 12 games per tournament so we werenít able to play two out of three. Top three is a good finish."

"Cassie Gran led us in the tournament with 11 aces, Alecia had 10."

Statistics for both pool play and playoffs: Cassie Gran had 59 set assists, 19 kills, 17 digs, 11 aces and was 48 for 53 serving; Alecia Fruechte 27 kills, 19 digs, 3 blocks, 2 set assists, 9 ace serves and was 53 for 59 serving; Megan King 27 kills, 30 digs, 3 blocks, 4 aces and was 45 for 49 serving; Libby Augedahl 19 kills, 10 digs, 3 blocks, 3 set assists, and was 6 for 7 serving; Amber Ideker 11 kills, 18 digs and 1 block; Amber Sorenson 13 kills, 5 digs and 5 blocks; Lindsey Gran 6 digs, 1 set assist, 1 ace, and was 30 for 34 serving; Jenna Schmitz 1 ace and was 20 for 21 serving, Aly Meyer 2 kills, 6 digs, 5 aces and was 24 for 33 serving.
