The Argus is pleased to include here some preview information that through some fax/techno glitch was not included in last weekís paper along with the photo of the returning letter winners.
The Caledonia girlsí volleyball team has five seasoned returning letterwinners in outside hitters Alecia Fruechte (senior), Amber Ideker (senior) and Libby Augedahl (junior); setter Cassie Gran (junior); and middle back Megan King (junior).
Coach Scott Koepke said that Megan King will be a player teams will have to account for. "Sheís got a very live arm and will be tough to stop.
"Alecia Fruechte will be very key for us passing the serve along with Libby Augedahl," said Koepke.
"Cassie Gran will be running our team and will give our hitters many hittable balls," he said.
Koepke said that passing the serve is a team strength, while its weakness would be inexperience. "We think weíll be competitive this year with all the teams in the conference," said Koepke. Koepke also added that the conference will be very strong with Wabasha-Kellogg, St. Charles and Kingsland conference favorites. "Weíre hoping to be in the upper half of the Three Rivers South Conference," he said.
Last year the teamís record was 5-5 in the conference and 21-9 overall.
Caledonia 3, La Crescent 1
The Warriors opened their season on Tuesday, Aug. 28 with a win at La Crescent. The four-game match had scores of 25-14, 25-15, 28-30 and 25-15.
Koepke said that his girls worked really hard and talked pretty well. "Megan King played a nice match with 10 kills and 10 digs," said Koepke. "Alecia Fruechte served well with 4 aces, and Amber Sorenson had 4 blocks and 4 kills in her first varsity match. Cassie Gran did a nice job getting the ball to our hitters ending up with 25 set assists."
Koepke said that La Crescent really hustled and ran down a lot of balls, which was key for them in game three. "Aly Meyer played a nice match for us, as did Amber Ideker who had to switch positions since Libby wasnít able to play because of her ankle."
Caledonia 0, W-K 3
Caledonia traveled to Wabasha to meet W-K on Thursday, Aug. 30. The conferenceís favorite team defeated the Warriors in three games: 17-25, 23-25, 22-25.
"The girls in our first two matches did some real nice things and since we have new faces out there we are still polishing our play," said Koepke. "One of those players, Laquita Becker, played a very solid match at middle back agaist W-K. Sheís one of the new faces weíre looking to step up and she did with a lot of nice passes and great hustle.
"Amber Ideker had 11 digs and Megan again played very well at the net. Thirteen kills and 1 error is a great effort. This was a good match to see where we have to go from here. The girls are working hard in practice to keep getting better each day."
ï Next: Caledoniaís next two games are at home. The Warriors host Dover-Eyota on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Winona Senior High School on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
