Yvonne Murphy of Penn Yan, N.Y. passed away on Feb. 10, 2012 from complications related to heart surgery. She was surrounded by her family.
Yvonne was born on Aug. 30, 1938 to Harold and Ragnhild St. Mary in Caledonia, Minn. She was an active and talented musician, playing the piano, organ and accordion. Yvonne studied music at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wis. and later completed her bachelors degree in education from Keuka College, followed by a master’s degree from Nazareth College, both in upstate New York.
Yvonne was an elementary school teacher at Dundee Central School from 1976 to 1995. She was an avid bird watcher, quilter and seamstress. In the last years of her life Yvonne was a very active and passionate participant in the Argentine Tango dance community. She travelled across the country enjoying every opportunity to dance as well as arranging numerous milongas and other Argentine Tango events. She was never more radiant than when dancing the tango, or when speaking of her dance adventures with anyone who would listen.
Yvonne is survived by her mother, Ragnhild St. Mary; brothers Glenn, Lyle, Duane, Allan and Bryan St. Mary; sister Audrey Almo; loving husband of 53 years, Dr. Dennis K. Murphy; children, Brenda, Dennis Jr. (Penny) and Jerald (Kathleen) Murphy and beautiful granddaughters Lauren and Meridith Murphy and Alanna Cropley.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at St. Michaels Church in Penn Yan. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weldon Funeral Home in Penn Yan on Friday, Feb. 17.
