Julitta Smith

Julitta “Judy” Smith, 87, of Caledonia, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

Judy was born April 16, 1924 in Caledonia to Nicholas and Katherine (Hosch) Guillaume. She married Virgil Smith July 8, 1941 in Caledonia. Virgil preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1988. Judy worked as a bookkeeper at Land O’ Lakes and Ma Cal Grove Country Club until she retired and cared for her husband in his illness. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women. Judy enjoyed flower gardening, fishing, playing cards, and her cat, Tiger.

She is survived by her four children, Carol (Ken) Van Minsel, Caledonia; Janet (Lonnie) Berg, Burnsville, Minn.; James Smith, Prior Lake, Minn. and John (Charlotte) Smith, Red Wing, Minn.; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; special friend Ron Johnson of Caledonia; brother-in-law, George (Marita) Smith, La Crosse and several special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Schleich and Lavina Guillaume, and a brother Clarence Guillaume.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery Caledonia. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday at Holy Family Hall, next to the church, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
