Austin Goergen of the Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove wrestling program competed in the USA Dream Team Classic on April 20 in Iowa City, Iowa. As a member of the USA Dream Team, he competed against Team Iowa 285 pounder Collin Bevins of Creston/Orient-Mackberg.
Goergen fell behind 6-0 after the first period, according to his father, Dan Goergen. “Austin got his arms out a little on his takedown and was thrown into a cradle,” he said. That move was Bevins’ signature move. “We didn’t know if Bevins could go a full six minutes,” coach Goergen said. “Austin came back in the second period making is 10-8.”
In the third period, Bevins got an injury timeout with a bloody nose. That and his slippery body worked against Austin Goergen’s efforts to use a Granby move. Bevins won 12-9.
A Wrestling USA story said that Bevings ‘held off’ Goergen’s surge. Bevins was an unranked wrestler having committed to play football at Iowa State. The two had a common opponent this year and both of them pinned him. Goergen had been ranked fifth nationally, according to USA Wrestling.
The other wrestler from Minnesota, Michael Kroells, was behind 5-3 when he won by injury default.
