Letter carrier food drive a success

To the Editor:

Once again our community has overwhelmingly supported the Letter Carriers Food Drive held nationally on May 12.

National results haven’t been tallied yet but locally we surpassed last years’ collection by over 50 pounds!

Houston County residents donated over 1,700 pounds of food for our local food shelf during our one day drive.

The National Association of Letter Carriers and our many sponsors applaud everyone who helped to make this years food drive a success.

Postmasters of local cities who may not have letter carriers in their office supported us with collection boxes in their lobbies.

Rural carriers as well as city carriers were diligent in collecting bags of food on doorsteps and in mail boxes while delivering your letters. The extra time it may have taken is very much appreciated.

Retired city carrier David Olson volunteered his time and vehicle to deliver items collected by the carriers to the food shelf making for a more efficient and time saving operation.

It is heartwarming to know that even though we remain in the midst of difficult economic times people will still pull together for a good cause.
