Russell D. “Mad Dog” Goetzinger, 62, of Freeburg, Minn., (rural Caledonia), died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at his home.
He was born May 14, 1950, in Caledonia to Arnold B. and Margaret (Koelsch) Goetzinger. Russ was a 1970 graduate of Caledonia High School and shared one of his proudest moments as a member of the 1970 state wrestling team. It was also during his wrestling years that he was given the nickname Mad Dog. On Sept. 30, 1978, he married Jean Moen and they later divorced. Russ was employed as a union carpenter for the Carpenters Local 1382 of Rochester, Minn. until his retirement. He loved spending time outdoors in his garden, hunting and fishing, enjoying time at his boathouse and playing horseshoes. Russ also liked golfing and bowling.
Survivors include his three children, Jon Goetzinger and Brian Goetzinger, both of Freeburg, Minn. and Alyssa Goetzinger, Houston, Minn.; seven siblings, Verne (Pastor Sharon) Goetzinger, Sargeant, Minn.; Elaine (Sylvan) Hauser, Spring Grove, Minn.; Ronald (Sharon) Goetzinger, Sturgeon Lake, Minn.; Lyle (Kathy) Goetzinger, New Albin, Iowa; Leslie (Cindy) Goetzinger and Daniel (Jane) Goetzinger, both of Freeburg, Minn., and Maureen (Raymond) Dock, Eau Claire, Wis.; several nieces and nephews; and his good friends Larry Kohlmeier and Doug Moen.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Myron Goetzinger; and one nephew, Philip Goetzinger.
Memorial services will be Saturday, June 2, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Evangelical Church of Peace, Crooked Creek Township, rural Freeburg, Minn. Rev. William J. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, on Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
