Hunger never takes a vacation

To the Editor:

The Summer Food and Fund Drive, sponsored by the Caledonia Argus, starts next week July 9 through July 20 with all food and proceeds going to the Houston County Food Shelf located at 138 East Main St., Caledonia, telephone 507-725-3677.

As we all know, while summer is looked upon as a time of fun and vacations, hunger never takes a vacation.

During the summer there is no school to provide children free or very low cost meals. Accordingly, families must locate and obtain this extra food. In many cases the Food Shelf is the only available community resource for this food.

In addition, the unemployment status for Houston County is still high, and the number of disadvantaged persons has increased this past year. The need for food has also greatly increased this past year, as has the numbers seeking more food. The most vulnerable people to be effected by hunger are children, disadvantaged and seniors.

The thing is that the children, disadvantaged and seniors are not able to avoid hunger without our help. They all depend on all of us for help! Please help.

Donations of food and money are greatly appreciated, and we make your giving of a donation very easy.

There are food carts in many places for you to drop off the food, including St. Mary’s Church, St. Pat’s Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Quillins, The Bank of the West, the Merchants Bank, the Eitzen State Bank, The Food Shelf and the Argus.

The Caledonia Argus also has a match program for the benefit of the Food Shelf.

There is no need for anyone in Houston County to be in hunger… unless we ignore our neighbor’s needs. Please help.

God Bless Houston County.
