National champ headlining youth wrestling camp

Wrestlers taking part in the annual Tri-State Wrestling Camp will want to get there early and get a good seat on the mat as one of the most successful wrestlers for the University of Iowa will be in attendance this year.

Matt McDonough, a two-time national champion and three-time NCAA finalist for the Hawkeyes will address the camp, which runs July 19 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Caledonia High School auxiliary gym.

Spencer Yohe, one of the event’s organizers, said, “With the exception of Olympic champion Rulon Gardner, Matt is the biggest name in wrestling to appear at a Caledonia wrestling camp.”

McDonough captured his second NCAA D1 wrestling championship in March and also competed in the 2012 Olympic wrestling trials. With two titles under his belt he will look to become one of just a few Iowa Hawkeyes to win an elusive third NCAA title.

His 100-4 overall record at Iowa gives him the fourth best overall winning percentage in Iowa history. McDonough was recently named Iowa’s nominee for the 2012 Jesse Owens Big 10 Male Athlete of the Year. The chemistry major from Marion, Iowa won three prep state championships for Linn-Marr high school.

The camp will be split up into two sessions. Grades 1 through 5 will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. July 19, and wrestlers in grades 6 through 12 will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The cost for the camp is $30 per wrestler for those in grades 6 through 12 grades and $20 for those in grades 1 through 5. A team discount is available for groups of 12 or more wrestlers with the cost being $300.

Registration is due by July 15, or you can sign up the day of the camp. Please contact Yohe at syohe@acegroup.cc or at 320-766-1934 or 507-495-3213. You may also contact Matt Blocker at mblocker17@live.com.
