She was born Aug. 10, 1922, on the home farm near Eitzen to Herman and Ella (Beneke) Wiegrefe. Marie was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen. She attended Eitzen, Winnebago Valley, and Caledonia Elementary Schools and graduated with her high school diploma from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul. On June 7, 1941, Marie married Neil Comstock at the parsonage of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Neil passed away on Sept. 28, 1991. Together they lived in Houston, Minn., for 10 years until moving to Caledonia in 1951, where she continued to live her entire life.
Marie was always a hard worker. She was employed at Skifton’s in Houston, the Caledonia Hospital, Johnson’s Gamble Store and then at Houston County Social Services for 31 years until her retirement in 1985. Marie enjoyed traveling including trips to Europe, the Holy Lands, mystery trips, and other trips throughout the United States and Canada. She was a devoted and dedicated member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia where she participated in the WELCA, various church circles, and was a longtime Do Day Quilter. Marie also volunteered for Semcac, the Red Cross, Caledonia Care and Rehab, as well as many other organizations.
Survivors include her three children, Judy (Tom) Wiebke, Audrey Gardner and Keith (Sandie) Comstock; six grandchildren, Daniel (Julie) Wiebke, Dawn (John) Montague, Jason (Dana) Wiebke, Tony (Heidi) Gardner, Jane (Mike) Jones, and Joe Gardner; three step-grandchildren, Brian (Linda) Vinson, Ronald (Marsha) Vinson, and Randy Vinson; 17 great-grandchildren, Mara, Amanda, and Melissa Wiebke, Evan and Elle Montague, Tyler and Jenna Wiebke, Heather (Jared) Rask, Tanner, Sophia, Dylan, and Gabriel Gardner, Cody, Nia, and Carter Gardner, and Tayla and Brandon Fulcher; three great-great-grandchildren, Weston, Livia, and Easton Rask; her sister, Margaret (Jack) Nelson; two brothers, Leonard (Lillie) Wiegrefe and Lester Wiegrefe; two sisters-in-law, Lela (Carroll) Blagsvedt and Marlys Comstock; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Wiegrefe and her brother-in-law, Dale Comstock.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 17 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. James Scaife will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, on Monday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
