Richard Cordes was on his way to Caledonia south on Hwy. 26, just north of Brownsville, when he noticed something amiss in the river on July 31. He saw a tow traveling south on the main channel toward a distressed barge that found itself stuck crossways in the main river channel. “I drove to the south end of Wildcat Park, and I was right at the tail end of the barge there. I’ve never seen anything quite like that happening there,” Cordes said. He was able to shoot the above photo before crews could fix the big problem.
Emergency dredging of the area was performed by The Army Corps of Engineers, who took days to fix the problem due to an accumulation of sand. The main channel remained closed until Aug. 3, though the barge was freed 24 hours after being stuck.
