Walter Breeser

Walter O. “Walt” Breeser, 92, of New Albin, Iowa, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa.

He was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Allamakee County, Iowa, to Carl and Laura (Pottratz) Breeser. Walt was involved with farm work, logging and silo building before going to barber school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On July 20, 1946, he married Phyllis Meyer at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in New Albin and they have shared 66 years of marriage. Walt barbered in New Albin for over 50 years before retiring on July 1, 2008. He was proud to be honored as one of the 10 best barbers in Iowa. Walt was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Church of New Albin serving on the church council for many years. He also served on the New Albin Town Council for many years. Walt and Phyllis liked to travel, going on many bus tours around the country.

Survivors include his loving wife, Phyllis; three children, Barbara (Gary) Dickinson, Cashton, Wis.; Beverly (Tom) Vaughan, Sumner, Iowa and Galen Breeser (friend, Barb), Norwalk, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Eric (Nicole) Dickinson, Nancy (Gregg) Erickson, Cid (Tammy) Breeser, Niki (Matt) Tschirgi, Neil Davis, Luke (Ashley) Davis, and Lance, Chase, and Hayes Breeser; 13 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Marsha Breeser, Stevens Point, Wis.; one sister, Ethel Thomas, New Albin; one sister-in-law, Joan Meyer, New Albin; one brother-in-law, Kenny Meyer, Bloomington, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Steven; three-brothers, Fred (Norma) Breeser, Robert (Vera) Breeser and Ed (Delores) Breeser; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gilman Meyer, Melba (John) Beneke, Leanna Meyer, Warren Meyer, and Ray Thomas; and a special niece, Susan Thomas.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 337 1st St. S.E., New Albin. Rev. William J. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Memorial Cemetery.  Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center on Monday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Church of New Albin, the New Albin Volunteer Fire Department or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
