Warriors 2-0 after thrashing St. Charles

Caledonia rolled up 338 yards of total offense and gave up just 138 yards as the Warriors improved to 2-0 with a 37-thrashing of St. Charles Friday night at St. Charles.

Quarterback Alex Varney completed just three passes, but two of them were for touchdowns as the Warriors jumped out to a 24-0 lead at halftime and cruised to their second straight win to open the 2012 season.

“We had a lot of young kids get some reps and that was good to see,” said Caledonia coach Brent Schroeder. “I thought our enthusiasm and intensity were good.”

The Warriors scored three times in the first 12 minutes, getting a 27 yard field goal from Levi Schmitz, a 12 yard run from Brad Strub and a 30 yard touchdown pass from Varney to Adam Buttell.

Varney added a five yard run in the second quarter as Caledonia took control of the game. As impressive as the offense has been in the early going, the Warrior defense is just as potent. Caledonia held the Saints scoreless and allowed just 138 yards after holding P-E-M to 144 Aug. 31.

Schroeder admits the defense is solid, “I knew after the P-E-M game the potential this defense has, they are doing a great job so far and we’re always striving for perfection.”

Caledonia gave up 108 yards on the ground with Cody Ball accounting for 49 of them on just four carries.

Varney hit Buttell for his second score of the game from 21 yards out, and Jacob Swindel scored on a 17 yard gallop for the 37-0 final.

Up next for the Warriors will be their homecoming game this Friday against Dover-Eyota. “We want to play mistake-free football and not have any turnovers or penalties,” Schroeder said. “We’ll strive to clean up the little things this week.”

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
