Led by 162 rushing yards from senior Brad Strub and another dominating effort from the defense, the Caledonia Warriors remained undefeated with a 40-7 thrashing of Fillmore Central Friday night in a game played in Harmony.
The Warriors, ranked #1 in Class AA, scored three times in the first quarter and held the Falcons to just 107 total yards to win their 17th straight game.
Levi Schmitz gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead after hauling in a 23 yard touchdown pass from Alex Varney to open the scoring, and Caledonia went up 14-0 on a five yard run from Jacob Swindell. The Falcons then got a 73 yard touchdown run from Dan Gatzke to cut the lead to 14-7, but Schmitz added a 33 yard touchdown run to give the Warriors a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A pair of touchdowns from Adam Buttell in the second quarter put the Warriors up 33-7 at the break. Buttell scored on a 14 yard pass from Varney and a nine yard strike from Mason DeMorett, and Varney added a two yard dive in the third quarter for the 40-7 final.
Strub averaged 10.125 yards per carry and has rushed for 332 yards in Caledonia’s last two games, averaging 10.7 yards per carry over that span. Other than Gatzke’s 73 yard run, the Falcons managed just 34 yards of offense the rest of the game.
Caledonia returns home Friday night to host Rushford-Peterson at 7 p.m. After losing their first game to Lewiston-Altura, the Trojans have won three straight, including a 46-12 win over Kingsland Friday night.
