Girls take on Winona Cotter Thursday
Maria Fruechte and Emma Lange combined for 40 kills, and Taylor Winjum added 52 assists when the Caledonia volleyball team, ranked #8 in the state, held off a valiant effort from Rochester John Marshall Oct. 15, winning 25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 25-23 and 15-12 at JM.
The Warriors (21-6) had their hands full with John Marshall. Caledonia coach Scott Koepke said, “This match had a little bit of everything. The most important thing it had was a group of girls staying connected and working to grind it out.”
John Marshall middle hitter Brianna Atkins tallied 21 kills, six digs and three blocks for the Rockets, who also got 18 kills from Nicole Fautsch, and Amberlee Dunagan, who tallied two kills, 45 assists, half-a-dozen digs and one block.
“The team really stuck together and kept working at it. The fifth set we were very efficient and did not miss a serve,” Koepke said. “We also played some great defense which began with getting some blocks on their amazing middle hitter. They also have a very good setter.”
Maddy Mullins added nine kills for the Warriors, and Lauren Rusert and Lottie Augedahl added 12 digs each. Lange had 17 digs for the Warriors, who are the #1 seed in the 1AA East sub-sectional and will host Winona Cotter Thursday night at CHS at 7 p.m.
La Crescent will play Dover-Eyota at La Crescent with the two winners playing Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. Chatfield is the #2 seed and will take on Lake City Thursday night with St. Charles, seeded third, hosting P-E-M at St. Charles.
