To the Editor:
Election Day is not far away now and an important vote is coming up for our state constitution. The marriage amendment will define marriage in Minnesota as being between one man and one woman. This agrees with the Bible’s teaching wherein God made them male and female in his image. Added to this is the detailed account of God’s special creation of Eve and bringing her in marriage to Adam. The Bible states this conclusion: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh,” (Genesis 2:24). We see the pattern established in nature for all time: male and female, father and mother, husband and wife, one family unit.”
Are we enforcing morality upon others by voting “yes” for this amendment? Yes! All laws enforce morality upon all of us. Thus we have a legal system, courts, judges, lawyers, police, penalties and prisons. The argument is made that a state law already exists restricting marriage to one man and one woman in Minnesota. However, this can be challenged in the courts. Judges are not all cut out of the same mold. There are activist and constitutional judges with the activist judges feeling more free to interpret laws more broadly if certain details are not spelled out in the constitution. However, the judges are bound by the state constitution and must abide by the detail it gives. The constitution gives the people the ultimate authority over government by setting the boundaries for where it may and may not go.
Which ever way this votes goes, this issue has certainly brought to light our society’s great need to turn to God’s mercy and reinvigorate the blessing of marriage and family. Let’s be honest with ourselves, marriage and family are in terrible condition in America. More than ever we need to be in Christ’s unconditional and sacrificial love, practicing it in our families. Only this will bring about the change that is really needed.
