Oren Ellingson

Oren Charles Ellingson, 97, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at Tweeten Health Services in Spring Grove, where he had been a resident since July 2010.

Oren was born in Spring Grove on March 7, 1915 to Oliver and Minnie (Trehus) Ellingson. He was baptized and confirmed his faith at Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring Grove.

He graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1934. He attended Winona Business College for two years and then returned to Spring Grove where he was involved in the feed business for 55 years.

On Oct. 4, 1936, he married Alvina Corine Solum at the Solum farm on the date of Alvina’s parents’ 25th wedding anniversary.

Oren held many civic offices and was actively involved in community affairs. He was past president of the commercial club, served six years on the city council, was a volunteer fireman for 17 years, held two terms on the board of education, served as president of Trinity Lutheran Church, was treasurer for the Spring Grove telephone company for over 25 years and was a charter member and board member of MaCalGrove Country Club and the Lions Club. He received the Honorary Chapter Farmers Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the local FFA chapter. In 1958 the Minnesota Statehood Centennial Commission honored Oren as a Minnesota Sports Champion for his many years in baseball. In 1988 he received the Citizen Recognition Award from the Spring Grove School district; in 1990 the Syttende Mai Committee named him Business Person of the Year and in 2000 Oren and Alvina were the grand marshals.

Oren was well known for his athleticism. He played town team basketball for 10 years, town team baseball for 30 years, bowled until age 84 and golfed until 94.

Oren is survived by four sons, Charles (Audrey), Caledonia; Thomas, Mabel; Mark (P.J.), Lake George, Colo. and Dean (Jennifer), Spring Grove; one daughter-in-law, Jean Ellingson, Rochester; nine grandchildren, Susan (Paul) Blaisdell, Dodge Center; Chuck Ellingson, Caledonia; Anne (Brett) Scheetz, Rochester; Beth (fiance Jesse) Ellingson, Denver, Colo.; Karen (Shawn) Cornella, Leadville, Colo.; David Ellingson, Rochester; Lucas (Carolann) Ellingson, Superior, Colo.; Sam Ellingson, Winona; Nicole Ellingson, Spring Grove; eight great-grandchildren, Jack, Kate, Ella, Samantha, Alex, Grant, Oliver and Witt, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

His wife of 69 years and two sisters, Margaret O’Neill and Doris Riede, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Zane Anderson will officiate. The visitation will be on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Roble Funeral Services of Spring Grove, from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

The family requests memorials are given in lieu of flowers.
