Houston County Protectors hosting esteemed speakers

Houston County Protectors will host a public information meeting Jan. 17 at the Four Seasons Community Center in Caledonia concerning the economic impact and health risks associated with frac sand mining. The meeting will last from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dr. Wayne Feyereisn from the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester will examine the health risks posed by silica dust and the chemicals used to process frac sand.

He will be followed by Dr. Steven Deller, a professor of agriculture and applied economics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Deller will discuss the financial opportunities and threats posed by frac sand mining.

The meeting is free and the public is strongly encouraged to attend. Snacks and refreshments will also be available.

Houston County enacted a year-long moratorium on frac sand mining last February in order to give county officials and citizens time to learn more about what industrial scale sand mining will mean to the county and its residents. Unless the moratorium is extended, frac sand mining could begin in Houston County next month.
