Monica was born in Alamakee County, Iowa to Frank and Kathryn Moore Hurley and grew up on a farm with sisters Leonette and Lorna. Monica graduated from New Albin High School in Iowa and attended Winona State Teachers College. She taught grades one through eight in Winnebago, Minn.
Monica worked at the Pentagon as a legislative liaison during World War II. On June 13, 1945, Monica married Leland Myhre at Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, D.C. As a resident of Minneapolis and Edina, Monica was active in the Country View Garden Club, St. Pius Guild and the Funeral Guild at Our Lady of Grace Church. Helping people was important to Monica and she volunteered for many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Loves and Fishes, the Minnesota Zoo and all of the schools her children attended. She supported a number of charities but none more important than the many children of the Christian Children’s Fund. Monica’s favorite activities were traveling, camping, square dancing and creating a backyard wildlife habitat.
Monica is survived by her husband Leland, six children and their spouses: Signe and Jay Heffern, Sonia Meade, Karen Myhre, Kenneth and Kay Myhre, Gary and Jayne Myhre, Maureen Myhre, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sisters Leonette Eikens and Lorna Eppert; brother-in-law Jerry Eppert; sisters-in-law Gertrude Haugstad, Irene Rostvold, Shirley Myhre, Ruth Ostlie and many nieces and nephews. Monica was a remarkable woman; she is loved and will be missed by many.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5071 Eden Ave., Edina, Minn. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
