She was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Caledonia, to Anton and Anna (Schwebach) Ernster. Helen married William McCabe on Nov. 12, 1941 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1989.
Helen enjoyed playing cards and golf. Most of all she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen was a wonderful mother who taught us so many things we will always cherish and remember. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and St. Mary’s Church and its Council of Catholic Women.
She is survived by her five children, James (Carol) McCabe, Hokah, Minn.; Joseph (Linda) McCabe, Caledonia; Jean (Dale) Kinstler, Bangor, Wis.; Charlie (Patricia) McCabe, Caledonia, and Joanie (Kevin) Vatland, Mabel, Minn.; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike; a great-grandson, Joshua and sisters Eleanor Link and Wilma Jennings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Fathers Thomas Jennings and Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
