Records fall at Last Chance meet

It was another good round of weightlifting for members of the Caledonia team Feb. 23. Seven members either qualified for the state championship March 9, the 2013 National Youth Championships in St. Joseph, Mo. June 28 through 30, or both.

Taking part in the Caledonia Last Chance Meet at CHS, Rachel Welsh, Madisyn Heaney, Lydia DeMorett, Trece Frank, Devan Heaney, Maria Fruechte and Jacob Cuda moved on with DeMorett, Fruechte and Cuda each qualifying for the state meet and Welsh, Heaney, Frank and Devan Heaney qualifying for both the state and national meets.

Frank and Fruechte both established new Minnesota state records during the day. Frank, lifting in the female junior varsity division, broke all three of her current state records in the snatch, clean-and-jerk and total weight lifted. Her lift of 63 kg in the snatch and 77 kg in the clean-and-jerk were both new records, and the total weight of 140 kg is also a new state mark. Fruechte, competing in the female varsity division, set new records in all three classes as well, lifting 73 kg in the snatch, 91 kg in the clean-and-jerk and 164 total kgs.

Rachel Welsh lifted 32 kg in the snatch and 48 kg in the C&J to also qualify for state and nationals and placed second in her division overall.

Madisyn Heaney will also go to nationals, lifting 37 kg in the snatch and 52 kg in the C&J to win the JV 58kg female weight class. DeMorett will lift at the state meet in Lakeville March 9, placing second in the JV 63 kg division with a total weight lifted of 82 kg (35 snatch, 47 C&J).

On the boys side Will Hoskins and Mick Bullerman both competed in the 50 kg class with Hoskins placing third and Bullerman fourth. Devan Heaney won the JV 62 kg class with lifts of 56 and 80 kg and will participate in both the state and national meets. Cuda placed third in the boy’s varsity 77 kg class with lifts of 62 and 78 for a total of 140 kg to go to nationals. Shane Sheehan also lifted in the varsity 77 kg category.
