William “Bill” Bissen
He was born in La Crosse, Wis., May 28, 1921, to Paul and Agnes (Cane) Bissen. He married Mary Wiczek on May 30, 1947 in Winona, Minn., and she preceded him in death on Oct. 30, 1951. He the married Rita Horihan on June 20, 1953 in Hokah, Minn. She preceded him in death on April 1, 1995.
Bill attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church Grade School and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1938. Bill enlisted in the US Army Aug. 12, 1942. He served in the Aleutian Islands-Anti Aircraft Battery for 16 months. He was then assigned to Ft. Bliss, Texas as an instructor in self propelled anti-aircraft artillery. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945, at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Bill was a salesman for Standard Brands from July 9, 1946, to March 4, 1966. He then was an agent for Prudential Insurance Co. from March 7, 1966 to May 28, 1983. He enjoyed the friendship of many during his years in sales.
He is survived by four daughters, Joan (Gerry) Pechmann, Cottage Grove, Wis.; Agnes (Tom) Neumeister, La Crosse, Wis.; Ann (Mark) Dutton, Burnsville, Minn., and Rose (Jeff) Payne, St. Paul, Minn.; two sons, John Bissen, La Crosse, and Stephen Bissen, Tomah, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Todd (Christina) Neumeister, Brad (Erica) Neumeister, Amy Neumeister, Rob and Greg Dutton, Erich (Jenna) Pechmann, Christina Pechmann, Katie (Nate) Williams, Kellie Payne, Curtis Payne, and nine great-grandchildren. He is further survived by one sister, Mary Larsen, La Crosse; sisters-in-law; Char Flottmeyer, Middleton, Wis., Ruth Horihan, Hokah, Minn. and Katie Bissen, Madison, Wis., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary (Wiczek) Bissen and infant son Joseph; wife, Rita (Horihan) Bissen; his parents, Paul and Agnes Bissen; sisters, Kathryn Pietrykowski, Bernadine Neefe and brother John Bissen.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 11, 2013, in St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main St., La Crosse. Msgr. Charles Stoetzel will officiate with burial to be held in Mt Calvary Cemetery, Hokah. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home, 1501 West Ave. So., La Crosse, Wis. with a Rosary to be held at 7 p.m. Family and friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass in the Cathedral on Thursday.
Bill’s family would like to thank Dr. David Momont and the staff at Bethany St. Joseph Care Canter for their compassionate care of our dad, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral Endowment Fund, and the Cathedral Maintenance Fund.
