Joan was born in Paxton Township, Redwood County, Minn. to William and Marie (Gores) Pelzel. The family lived in several towns across southeastern Minnesota, finally settling in Detroit, Mich. Joan graduated from St. Cyril Catholic High School in 1950. She worked at various jobs until finally finding her true calling as a nurse’s assistant. It was then she moved to Caledonia to help care for her aunt and uncle. While there she worked for many years at the local nursing home. After retiring from there, she continued to care of others as a home health care aide.
As a lifelong devout Christian, she was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia.
She is survived by her twin sister Jean Frost, Romeo, Michigan; sister Mary (William) Nall, Macomb, Mich.; sister Kathleen (Kenneth) Buyle, Manhattan, Kan.; brother Leroy Pelzel, Warren, Mich., and brother Stephen (Gail) Pelzel, Sterling Heights, Mich. She was also the beloved aunt of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and even great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother William Pelzel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, at St Mary’s Catholic Church, 450 Pine St, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the Mass.
